BlueOnyx 5212R development: Call for donations

The BlueOnyx Project could use a little help. Thank you!

BlueOnyx 5212R for AlmaLinux 10 / RockyLinux 10 / RHEL10

With the recent release of AlmaLinux 10 and RockyLinux 10 the development of BlueOnyx 5212R has shifted into high gear. We have set up the mirror architecture and build environments to be able to churn out RPMs, ISOs and install images. The SVN code tree has been copied over and adjustments to the code ans well as identifying yet missing requirements and building them has started.

In many such cases we're directly sourcing a modern version of that code and then building these latest versions as SRPM and RPMs. The core components like CCEd are already working, although that required some adjustments to the code to deal with compiler warning and errors. Many of the code improvements and granular modernization of selected RPM dependencies will eventually flow back into BlueOnyx 5211R and 5210R.

Still: It will take a couple of weeks until BlueOnyx 5212R is ready.

Likewise we also made some more or less fundamental changes to BlueOnyx by switching the GUI to use the new CCEd-API v2 to communicate with CCEd.

That was just "part 1" in a long term strategy to eventually replace CCEd with a more modern version designed on a clean slate and written in Golang. That will be "part 2" of that improvement.

Another larger overhaul of 5210R/5211R was just completed these days to eliminate the resource hungry Prometheus/Node_Exporter combo with an improved versions of CCEd-API.

So we're pretty active at moving BlueOnyx forward. Not only the upcoming BlueOnyx 5212R will benefit from these granular and constant improvements, but also 5211R and 5210R.

Help needed:

And here comes the uncomfortable part: I could really use some more help in the form of funding.

I'm willing to fund most of the BlueOnyx 5212R myself, but it's a lot of time and effort. The last call for donations in March raised slightly under 1000 Euros and was a great help, but the many hours spent on churning out 5212R are also hours where I'm not contributing to making ends meet.

You can help with that by making a donation to the BlueOnyx project or by purchasing software in the BlueOnyx shop to fund the development of BlueOnyx 5212R and I would appreciate it a lot.

You can find the Paypal link for donations at the end of this article - or in your BlueOnyx GUI on the page "BlueOnyx News" (first page after an "admin" login). On there it's the blue square button with the "P" from the Paypal logo.

Many thanks!
